Black walnut trees will reach a height of 70-80’ with a wide spreading crown. They thrive in deeper, well drained, neutral soils. Black walnut is a shade intolerant species and must have direct sunlight to grow optimally. Nuts are 1 ½ to 2 ½ inches in diameter and will fall shortly after the leaves fall. Black walnut is valued as a windbreak and as a food source for wildlife.
