BALSAM FIR (ABIES BALSAMEA)
The most shade tolerant conifer. A very hardy evergreen with symmetrical form and fragrant foliage (the crushed needles have a fabulous aroma). Needles-flat about 1” long. Moderate to rapid growth rate. Maturity age 100-200 years. Grows to 40-75 ft. tall. Prefers a rich, well-drained soil and requires ample moisture. Prefers medium soil textures (loams, silt loams, and clay loams) but will also grow (slowly) on gravelly sands and in peat swamps. SHADE TOLERANT.
