White Oaks get their name from the whitish color of the underside of their leaves. They grow at a moderate rate from 1-2 feet per year, reaching between 50 and 100 feet tall and 50 to 80 feet wide at maturity. In the fall the leaves turn into reds and burgundy colors and the leaves may stay on during the winter. White Oaks have a deep taproot and prefer moist, rich soil. Because of the tap root they can tolerate drought reasonably well. The acorns are a food staple for many wildlife critters.
