Description

WHITE PINE (PINUS STROBUS)

The largest conifer in Minnesota.  Rapid growing native tree which does well on a wide variety of soils, but less common on clays.  Needles are 5 per cluster, 3-5” long.  An excellent tree for windbreaks. Generally speaking, when comparing the popular white and Norway pines, the white pine is better suited to wetter and shadier conditions.    Prefers well drained, moist soil.  Cones 4-8” long. Bark is gray to brown and smooth when young, breaking with age into large broad scales. Grows 70-100 ft tall.  (THE MOST SHADE TOLERANT PINE)
